In 2008 the national football teams of Armenia and Turkey played each other for the first time. Historically it was very important. The match was played against a backdrop of conflict between the two countries, dating back to the First World War. Yet it brought the Turkish head of state and the Turkish flag before 35,000 Armenians. It was a match that hopefully showed the start of reconciliation between the two opposing countries.

For reconciliation to happen, something needs to bring the opposing groups together. In this case it was a football match. The Bible also speaks about reconciliation—we need to be brought back to God. Thankfully, God has provided the person to do the job—His own Son, Jesus. “For it pleased the Father that in [Jesus] all the fullness should dwell, and by [Jesus] to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross” (Colossians 1:19-20).

It was God’s choice to send us Jesus as our rescuer! We can have complete confidence that if we come to God, He will accept us. The reconciliation between countries is often only temporary, but reconciliation with God us an eternal certainty when we trust in Jesus. He came to bring us to the Father. Let’s not live on our own anymore.
