Do I need the Bible?

1When you travel somewhere for the first time, do you use a GPS, map or navigation app of some kind? Or do you wing it? Sometimes hoping for the best works out OK but not always! It’s pretty normal, when we’re going to new places, to have some kind of guide. That’s kind of what the Bible is. When we trust Jesus, we’re headed in a direction we’ve never travelled along, and to a destination we’ve never been to before: heaven. Jesus explained to his friends that he is the only “way” to heaven (John 14:6). Reading the Bible helps us to get to know Jesus better, find out more about how we should live while we take this journey, keep our focus on him and help us trust in God more and more. The Bible is our guide for the journey; it’s our heavenly GPS!

When we’re distracted by other things, uncertain about what to do, confused or getting stressed out, the Bible’s stories and teaching will redirect us back to the only “way” to stay close to God: knowing and trusting Jesus. When we think we’re doing OK and have things under control, the Bible reminds us how much we need Jesus’ strength and leading. When we feel like we’ve messed up too bad, the Bible reminds us that Jesus died exactly for that reason to forgive us, make us brand new and give us a place in heaven.

No matter what the distractions or disappointments each day might bring, the Bible guides us back to Jesus and keeps us on the right path to our final destination every time!
