In 1916 a vicar tried to join the  British army. He was refused on the grounds of his age and relatively poor health. He volunteered again the following year, and because so many men had died on the Western Front, he was accepted. He was trained in first aid and went to the horrors of the trenches, aged 55, as Chaplain, 4th class!

In 1918 he stood in front of King George V, all 5 feet 6 inches of him, and received the Victoria Cross to add to his Distinguished Service Order and Military Cross that he had also recently received. He was also appointed as chaplain to the king.

Yet no one paid attention when this vicar walked down a street. He was not athletic, nor handsome. His appearance did not bring awe or respect. But he had saved the lives of many men, and his bravery became almost legendary.

It says in the Bible that Jesus looked like a common man; He didn’t have a noticeable appearance (Isa. 53:2), but He too came to save many lives. Jesus was given no medals here on earth, but the Bible promises us that when He returns He will be crowned King and will be given all glory, which those who choose to follow Him will share in.

Are you prepared to meet Jesus as your King, or are you still passing Him by, unnoticed?

Who is Jesus to you?
