I have been reading the Our Daily Bread Bible reading notes for a very long time now—and I don’t think I will ever stop! This small book fits in my pocket perfectly whenever I go on tour or on an exercise. I can just flip it out and read it. Whenever I have a few minutes to spare, I pull out my Our Daily Bread and turn to that day’s article.
I like reading it because sometimes the stories told in the articles can be very relevant to my life. It can sometimes feel like I’m learning from the mistakes and triumphs of the writers. On the days that a passage of Scripture challenges me, I always talk about it further with someone—whether it’s my Pastor, father in law, Scripture Reader or Padre.
Whenever there is a story about anything to do with the military, I always keep it close to my heart. The one story that I can remember clearly was about a mother who had three sons that went to war. None returned. They died to keep their country safe. The writer used this to remind us that God sent His one and only Son to die for us. Amazing testimonies like this really help me to understand and think more about what God says in His Word.
If I’m struggling to pray, I like reading the prayers at the bottom of the page for even more encouragement. —Cpl Stefan Van Aswegen
