Before each season of the cricket Indian Premier League (IPL) the teams bid for some of the world’s best cricket players to join them. In February 2014 the Delhi Daredevils bought Kevin Pietersen for £880,000! When the season started, all eyes were on the Daredevil’s newly bought world-class talent to see if he was worth the cost. The main measure of a player’s success is whether his contribution is a good return on the investment.

In 1 Corinthians 6:20, Paul reminds us that we too have been “bought with a high price” (nlt). Paul shows a gripping picture of Christ’s great sacrifice. He rescued us from the cruel slavery of sin by buying us with the high price of His own life.

Understanding God’s great and loving investment in us should make us to want to make His sacrifice full of ‘pay outs’ in our lives. How is the return on His investment measured? By living to bring glory to Him! Our bodies, thoughts, dreams and desires have been bought to reflect the glory of God’s will and wisdom. In other words, we are no longer our own; we belong to Him.

Paul concluded, “So you must honour God with your body” (v.20 nlt). Living to reflect His glory is the return on investment that God wants!

Our salvation was infinitely costly to God, but it is absolutely free to us.
